Alert message sent 01/11/2018 12:26:00

Information sent on behalf of Lincolnshire Police

Good day.

This is scam awareness message brought to you by PCSO Jad from Horncastle Police NPT.

It has come to our attention residents are receiving unsolicited calls from individual(s) who claim to be from BT.

The caller goes on to state, the householder’s PC has a security issue. This can be resolved if the householder allows the caller to have remote access to the PC.

Once access is implemented, the caller may then proceed in a number of ways:

  1. Use the remote access to gain personal and identity information of the householder including passwords and bank details. This also opens up an opportunity to install malware / viruses on to the PC which the caller can use to access the PC at any time, and also mirror the contents of the householder’s PC monitor and webcam, effectively watching, ‘big brother’ style.

  1. Will inform the householder, the security issue with the PC requires further investigation my a member of the National Crime Agency (NCA). The call is then passed to a person impersonating an officer at the NCA. The officer explains they are investigating criminal activity and would like the householder to help entrap the criminals. The householder is asked to transfer monies to a nominated account which is monitored by the NCA, and/or to send a cash sum by registered post to a genuine postal address.

I must stress, BT or company’s such as Microsoft or Apple will never cold call suggesting issues with a computer.

Police will also never suggest a person becomes involved in entrapping criminal nor use your money to assist in such a process.

Once again, do not engage in conversation with anyone who cold calls, then asks you to confirm information about you, your family or anything to do with the household. Always take time to think by asking a trusted person i.e family member, friend, police, CIB or Trading Standards

If you have witnessed, and/or heard anything suspicious, and have information, please immediately call 101 quoting incident 529 31/10/2018 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers UK on 0800 555 111

Thank you.
